Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a type of psychotherapy that is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is a structured and time-limited therapy approach. It focuses on helping individuals understand and change their thoughts and beliefs about a traumatic event.
CPT is based on the theory that PTSD symptoms arise from the way a person thinks about and makes sense of a traumatic experience. It addresses the cognitive distortions and negative beliefs that can develop as a result of the trauma. By challenging and modifying these distorted thoughts, CPT aims to alleviate the distressing symptoms associated with PTSD.
The therapy typically involves a collaboration between the individual and a trained therapist. The therapist helps the individual identify and examine their thoughts and beliefs related to the traumatic event, with the goal of reducing the emotional impact and reevaluating any inaccurate or unhelpful thinking patterns.
Structured Protocol for CPT
CPT typically consists of 12 individual sessions, usually conducted once or twice a week. The treatment follows a structured protocol and includes various techniques such as:
- Education about PTSD symptoms and the underlying cognitive model.
- Identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts related to the traumatic event.
- Developing skills to evaluate the accuracy and usefulness of thoughts.
- Gradual exposure to trauma-related memories and emotions to reduce avoidance.
- Writing and reviewing a detailed account of the traumatic event to promote cognitive processing.
Goal of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
The goal of Cognitive Processing Therapy is to help individuals develop a more balanced and realistic understanding of the traumatic event, reduce distressing symptoms, and improve their overall well-being. It has been shown to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving functioning in many individuals who have experienced various types of trauma.
