How Grief & Bereavement Counseling Can Help You

Profound loss is something we all face at some point, yet no one is ever fully prepared for the overwhelming emotions—or the guilt of not grieving a “certain” way. By processing your feelings at your own pace, you can begin to move forward without carrying the weight of it all on your shoulders.

As specialized grief and bereavement counselors, we believe that even the hardest stories have turning points. With compassion and understanding, we’re here to help you transform this chapter of loss into one of growth, resilience, and meaning.

Our goal is to build a collaborative, trusting relationship grounded in mutual respect. We want to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you feel truly heard and understood. Our role is to walk beside you as you make sense of your grief and begin to rediscover healing and hope—allowing you to move on with peace and purpose.

Our Approach to Grief & Bereavement Counseling in Greenwood, IN

Our grief and bereavement counselors welcome all backgrounds, beliefs, and walks of life—including those rooted in faith and spirituality. While we offer Christian counseling, we do so only when requested; it is never assumed or imposed.

We’ll meet you where you are—without judgment. Our mission is to hold healing space for you—to honor your needs and help you find peace in your life and relationships.

Some of the approaches we use include:

Narrative Grief Therapy

Our therapists help you recognize how your loved one’s values, lessons, and love continue to shape your life. They guide you in finding meaning and purpose beyond your loss. This approach allows you to honor your grief while beginning new chapters of hope and healing.

Attachment-Based Grief Counseling

Our grief reactions are often deeply connected to our attachment relationships and styles. Our therapists help you understand how your attachment patterns influence your grieving process—whether through anxious clinging to memories, avoidant suppression of grief, or other responses. This approach supports you in maintaining a healthy bond with your loved one while building new, secure attachments and support systems.

Cognitive-Behavioral Grief Therapy

This approach is beneficial in treating complicated grief, helping you challenge self-blame, catastrophic thinking, and harmful beliefs. It encourages the development of healthy routines and practical coping strategies to manage grief triggers. Gradually, you’ll re-engage with life while still honoring your loss.

Strengths-Based Grief Support with Spiritual Integration

Our therapists help you recognize your resilience, coping resources, and sources of meaning throughout the grieving process. We help you acknowledge your capacity for healing and how your faith, spiritual beliefs, or search for meaning can offer comfort and direction. For those open to it, we incorporate reflections on God’s presence in suffering, eternal hope, and finding purpose in pain. However, we always respect your unique spiritual perspective and personal journey.

Through grief and bereavement counseling at Peace Family Counseling, we provide practical tools to help you find meaning in your grief. Together, we’ll support you on your journey of healing and growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the five stages of grief?

In 1969, psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross introduced the five stages of grief. While they’re listed in order, it’s important to know the grieving process isn’t linear. Grief varies from person to person. You can experience each of them simultaneously, alternately, or not at all.

Denial often acts as a defense mechanism against a painful reality. It can involve refusing to accept the loss or avoiding thoughts and conversations about it.

Anger can be felt toward anyone or anything: friends, family, doctors, yourself, your loved one, and even God. It provides meaning and structure to your pain.

In the bargaining stage, we feel we’d do anything to undo the loss. We try to negotiate a way out of the pain and suffering. It often brings guilt, with thoughts like “if only” or “what if”.

Depression can bring emptiness, intense sadness, and withdrawal. You often question what the point is in moving on with life on your own. It’s when you realize there’s no going back from your loss.

Finally, acceptance is often misunderstood as being “okay” with the loss. It’s not about feeling fine that they’re gone, but accepting it and learning to live with that fact. We may try to resist it, but we eventually recognize that we now live in a world where they’re missing.

Is my grief “normal” or do I need professional help?

There’s no ‘wrong’ or ‘right’ way to grieve, and most people can benefit from counseling, regardless of their grieving process. However, professional support becomes essential when grief severely impacts your daily life. Some concerning signs include:

  • You don’t feel supported by anyone, and/or you feel completely alone.
  • You’re experiencing persistent feelings of depression.
  • You’re having suicidal thoughts.
  • You’re struggling with everyday life.
  • You’re abusing substances or engaging in addictive behaviors.
How long should grief last?

Grief is a deeply personal process, and it looks different for everyone. Sometimes, people may feel better for a while, only to become sad again—this is completely natural. There’s no fixed duration for grieving. It’s essential to allow yourself to grieve in your own time and at your own pace.

Several factors can influence the grieving process, including:

  • Your relationship with the person you lost.
  • How their death or loss occurred.
  • What death means to you personally.
  • Your life experiences.
  • Cultural or spiritual practices.

Grief often lasts a year or more. While it usually becomes less intense with time, feelings of loss can persist—sometimes for decades. Even after a long time, certain memories or events can still trigger strong emotions, though these moments are often brief.

Will you make me “get over” my grief?

Absolutely not. As grief and bereavement counselors, our goal is to help you cope with your loss in healthy, supportive ways. What matters most is that you find meaning in your grief and learn to live with the reality of your loss. We understand that a significant loss can leave a lasting impact. Our focus is on helping your pain ease over time, without guilt or regret.

We’ll never impose social expectations on you. We won’t rush you to be “over it” or make you feel guilty for whatever you’re feeling. We truly believe you’re the keeper of your own story, and we’re here to offer support as you unfold the next chapter.

How can you help with the guilt and regrets I have about losing someone I loved?

We understand that feelings of guilt and regret are deeply human. They’re valid experiences—and completely okay. However, we believe something positive can come from them.

Feeling guilty doesn’t always mean you’ve done something wrong. We’ll help you understand what your guilt might be telling you and how to respond to it in a healthier way.

Ultimately, our goal is to guide you toward self-forgiveness. Letting go of guilt is possible, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
