Children & Teens Counseling
Greenwood & Indianapolis, IN
Is your child or teen having a hard time at school or home? Maybe they’ve become more reactive, defiant, or anxious, and despite your best efforts, nothing seems to help. Counseling gives children and teens the support they need to make sense of big, confusing emotions, while helping them feel more understood and secure.
If your child or teen is struggling, it’s important to remember it’s not a reflection of your parenting. Sometimes, they need support beyond what you’re able to provide. Their emotional processing system is still developing, and it develops faster than their rational thinking. On top of that, they face added pressures from school, peers, and social media—affecting self-image and identity exploration.
Growing up in the constant rush of today’s world can be overwhelming. The mix of intense emotions and life changes often leads to stress, low confidence, anxiety, or depression. In fact, about 20% of U.S. children and teens (ages 3–17) live with a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder.
If you’re in Greenwood or near the Indianapolis area, our counseling practice offers specialized therapy for children and teens. We help young people understand and manage their emotions in a safe, judgment-free space—walking beside them as they write a future filled with meaning and hope.

How Counseling for Children & Teens Can Help
Children and teens navigate a constantly changing world, which can be especially challenging since they are still trying to discover who they are. For children and teens, learning to understand their emotions and develop healthy ways to cope can ease everyday struggles and build confidence. It’s also an opportunity for parents to connect more deeply and offer meaningful support.
As specialized therapists, we support your child or teen as the author of their own story. No matter what they’ve experienced, we believe in their ability to heal—and we’ll be by their side every step of the way, guiding them through this journey of growth.
Our goal is to build a trusting relationship grounded in compassion—creating a safe space where your child can work through harmful thoughts and behaviors, build healthy boundaries, and truly recognize their value and potential. And they won’t be alone—they’ll feel supported not only by us, but also by your steady presence as their parents because you got them the help they needed when it mattered most.
Our Approach to Children & Teens Counseling in Greenwood, IN
We understand that for many families, faith is an important part of life and can be a source of strength and comfort for children and teens, too.
While we offer Christian counseling when requested, our priority is always to honor each child or teen’s unique needs and meet them where they are in their journey—whether or not they choose to include faith as part of that process.
Some of the approaches we use include:
Therapy for Children with Big Behaviors
Our therapists use age-appropriate therapeutic techniques that meet your child’s stage of development. When children struggle to verbalize their emotions or experiences, we may use drawing, storytelling, play, or other interactive tools to help them process what they’re feeling. This supports emotional regulation, self-expression and helps them cope with challenges at home, in school, or with big behaviors (i.e., tantrums or withdrawal).
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Children and Teens
This evidence-based approach helps young people understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By teaching age-appropriate coping and problem-solving skills, CBT is especially effective for children with ADHD, anger, or emotional regulation issues. It also supports teens struggling with defiant behaviors, substance use, and low motivation. It helps them identify triggers, build positive thinking patterns, and develop practical tools to manage daily challenges.
Parent-Child Coaching
We understand that parenting can be challenging and, at times, overwhelming. As part of treatment, we provide parent-child coaching to improve communication, establish healthy boundaries, and strengthen the parent-child relationship. This also includes teaching effective discipline strategies, helping families navigate power struggles, and maintaining consistent expectations at home and in school.
Strengths-Based Therapy with Parent Coaching
Rather than focusing only on problems, we help children heal by recognizing their unique strengths, interests, and abilities. Our therapists support your child in acknowledging their positive qualities and resilience while working toward meaningful goals. By integrating parent coaching, we help you reinforce these strengths at home, apply therapeutic strategies, and provide consistent support. This promotes a collaborative approach toward healing and growth.
Through children and teens counseling at Peace Family Counseling, we provide practical tools to help your child manage their challenges while guiding parents in offering the best support. We’re here to walk alongside you on this journey of healing and growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my child or teen needs counseling?
You may have noticed changes in your child’s behavior or actions that make you wonder if something is wrong. Sometimes, these signs follow a specific life event or experience—other times, they may appear without a clear reason.
If you recognize any of the signs we’ve listed above, it might be the right time to seek professional support to ensure your child gets the support they need.
What does a counselor do when working with children and teens?
A counselor who works with children or teens is trained to understand the psychological, social, and emotional challenges young people face, as well as the complexity of childhood and adolescence. They provide treatment and guidance using age-appropriate techniques adjusted to each child’s or teen’s unique needs.
Through counseling and/or coaching, they may also involve parents or teachers when appropriate to support the development of coping strategies, improve communication and self-esteem, and help regulate emotions. Children and teen counselors are equipped to treat conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, and issues related to behavior, school, or family life.
At what age should I start my child or teen in counseling?
Mental health challenges can begin as early as childhood. Between 2016 and 2021, nearly 1 in 5 children aged 3 to 17 were diagnosed with a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder.
There’s no specific age at which a young person should or shouldn’t begin treatment. What matters most is ensuring they receive appropriate mental health care as soon as you notice signs that they may need support. As a general rule, we believe the earlier the intervention, the better for most children and teens.
Therapy can be a powerful support in improving their mental well-being, confidence, and self-awareness.
What can I expect from the first session?
As therapists, we understand that the relationship kids build with their therapist is crucial for them to engage in therapy. During the first session, the therapist will check in with you to begin building a collaborative relationship.
We make an effort to involve you in the therapeutic process while maintaining your child’s confidentiality, helping them feel safe. When it comes to their safety, however, we will always share important information with you.
What is the level of parent involvement?
We understand that a child or teen’s challenging behaviors often have many layers: family, school, friendships, extracurricular activities, and more. Thus, we do our best to keep parents informed while also respecting the child’s need for confidentiality.
We typically check in with you at the beginning or end of each session, though there may be times when your child is not comfortable with regular updates. We ask for your patience as we build a strong therapeutic relationship with your child, while also including you in the process whenever possible.
When appropriate, we may offer coaching or guidance to help you support your child’s growth and progress. We also encourage parents to reach out via email or phone with any questions or concerns about therapy or their child.
