Anxiety Therapy

Greenwood & Indianapolis, IN

Spiraling thoughts, a racing heart, shortness of breath, and a sense of impending doom—living with anxiety is incredibly challenging, and facing these feelings every day can be truly exhausting. Maybe it feels like anxiety is the main character in your life, but anxiety therapy can help you take back the spotlight.

Everyone feels anxious sometimes—it’s part of being human. In fact, some anxiety can actually be helpful. It’s our built-in alarm system, passed down from our ancestors, meant to protect us from danger. But when that alarm goes off too often or too loudly, it can take over, making daily life feel overwhelming or even unsafe. That’s when it becomes a real problem.

Experiencing anxiety can feel isolating, but anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 19.1% of adults over 18— about 40 million people. So, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone.

If you’re in Greenwood or the Indianapolis area, our counseling practice provides specialized anxiety treatment to help you identify your specific triggers and fears and manage intense emotions. Over time, you’ll feel more empowered to face daily life with ease and confidence.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Excessive and ongoing anxiety and worry about various events or activities, even routine ones. This worry is often out of proportion to the actual situation, can cause physical symptoms, and is difficult to manage.

Panic Disorder

Frequent panic attacks—sudden episodes of intense anxiety, fear, or terror that escalate quickly and typically last a few minutes. This often leads to ongoing worry about future attacks and avoidance of places or situations where they’ve happened before.

Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)

Feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment, and fear of being judged or negatively perceived in social settings. This can result in severe anxiety, fear, and avoidance of social situations.

Agoraphobia and other specific phobias

Phobias involve panic and avoidance of a feared object or situation. Agoraphobia specifically includes places or scenarios that can cause you to feel embarrassed, trapped, or helpless, such as crowds or open spaces.

Other types of anxiety disorders include those linked to medical conditions or substance use, as well as disorders with more prevalence in children, like separation anxiety and selective mutism.

Some mental health conditions, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), involve intense anxiety and share similar symptoms with anxiety disorders. However, they are not classified as anxiety disorders and have their own distinct characteristics, which we can help you identify and address through a tailored treatment plan.

Our Approach to Anxiety Therapy in Greenwood, IN

Our anxiety therapists welcome all backgrounds, beliefs, and walks of life—including those rooted in faith and spirituality. While we offer Christian counseling, we do so only when requested; it is never assumed or imposed.

We’ll meet you where you are—without judgment. Our mission is to hold healing space for you—to honor your needs and help you find peace in your life and relationships.

Some of the treatment approaches we use include:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

By helping you identify and change negative thoughts and unhealthy behaviors, CBT allows you to recognize catastrophic thinking, question unrealistic fears, and develop coping techniques, like breathing and grounding exercises, or noticing negative thoughts to reduce anxiety symptoms. Over time, you’ll grow confident in your ability to manage difficult situations.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Helps you gradually face your fears in a controlled environment by identifying specific triggers and preventing unhealthy responses. Understanding what makes you anxious allows us to create customized hierarchies for repeated, structured exposure. Over time, you’ll learn to tolerate discomfort and realize that the feared outcomes rarely happen, leading to reduced anxiety symptoms.

Prolonged Exposure (PE)

For trauma-related anxiety, prolonged exposure involves re-experiencing traumatic memories and emotions in a safe, controlled therapeutic environment. Through imagination or in-vivo exercises, you’re able to process your trauma and reduce avoidance behaviors, helping you reclaim places and activities that once triggered your anxiety.

Mindfulness-Based Techniques

Combining mindfulness techniques with anxiety treatment helps you relate to anxious thoughts and feelings in a new way. Through grounding and breathing exercises, acceptance strategies, and behavioral changes, you’ll learn to observe anxiety without judgment and stay present—reducing its power over you and the distress from fighting your symptoms, while building resilience and emotional regulation.

Through anxiety treatment at Peace Family Counseling, we provide practical tools to help you manage anxious thoughts and learn to accept them as just thoughts. Together, we’ll support you on your journey of healing and growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I seek professional help for my anxiety?

Anxiety becomes concerning when it becomes unmanageable, gets overwhelming, or arrives unexpectedly—it’s considered problematic when it disrupts your daily life or gets in the way of your responsibilities.

Anxiety often manifests itself physically, emotionally, and psychologically, so you should consider seeking professional support if you notice any of the signs we listed above.

What does anxiety therapy look like?

Anxiety therapy doesn’t just treat the symptoms but goes deep into the root causes of your struggles. It helps you explore the underlying sources of your anxiety, shift your perspective to view triggering situations as less threatening, and develop healthier coping strategies.

Given that anxiety disorders can vary greatly, treatment will always differ, as it must be adjusted to your specific symptoms, needs, and goals. The duration of the therapeutic process will also depend on the type and severity of your disorder.

Typically, the first few sessions are focused on exploring your concerns, identifying triggers, and examining both past and present life dynamics—including relationships, work, and personality traits, when relevant. Once your therapist has gathered the necessary information, you’ll work together to develop positive coping strategies that suit you best.

Will you recommend that I take medication?

Generally, we don’t recommend you take medication. Even so, we believe taking medication is a personal decision, and we understand it can be necessary at times. In certain cases, we may encourage you to see your doctor or a provider to help you make that choice. You and your therapist can also explore this option together. Ultimately, the decision is yours, and we support you in what you feel would aid your healing journey.

Currently, we don’t have anyone on staff who can prescribe medication. However, we have strong relationships with trusted providers in the area and are happy to offer recommendations.

How soon will I feel better?

Therapy isn’t about quick fixes; it’s a space where you can heal at your own pace. Research suggests that many people begin to notice meaningful changes after around 8–10 sessions. Still, our goal is to work ourselves out of a job—we don’t want you to be in therapy forever, just for as long as you need.

That said, everyone’s journey is different. The length of therapy depends on your unique goals and treatment plan, which you and your therapist will begin shaping together during the first few sessions.

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline for healing. That’s why we focus on building a trusting, compassionate relationship that supports you on your journey toward a more fulfilling life.

What therapy approaches work best for anxiety?

The most effective type of treatment depends largely on your symptoms and diagnosis, but several approaches are commonly used to treat anxiety.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely practiced methods. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to anxiety.

Exposure therapy can be used on its own or alongside other therapies. It involves gradually and safely exposing you to feared situations, helping you build confidence and regain a sense of control.

Mindfulness-based techniques are also effective in reducing anxiety symptoms. They promote emotional regulation and acceptance, overall well-being, and effective stress management.
